Bass

Every band has a bass in some form or another. The bass is the cornerstone of every band and ensemble. The bass is present in many music genres ranging from heavy metal to folk music and from classical to jazz.

Bass guitar

The bass guitar usually has four strings, but you can also see five-string basses from time to time. A bassist mostly uses their fingers to play, but sometimes they might use a pick. Nowadays, basses come in a wide range of sizes for players of different sizes.

Even a beginner should purchase an amplifier, a strap, and a backpack-style bag to carry the bass easily to lessons and band rehearsals. A beginner bassist can purchase such a kit for home practice for a couple hundred euros. The teacher will help you choose the first instrument. You can find suitable instruments in the local instrument shops in Tampere.

Pupils usually start learning the bass when they are around 10 years old, but they can also start earlier or later. Age is not an issue when you are enthusiastic about music and want to learn to play.

Contrabass (rhythm music)

Nowadays, many bassists also play the contrabass as well. The PMO rhythm music branch teaches the contrabass from the angle of rhythm music. You can choose the contrabass as a side instrument for the bass guitar or study rhythm music in addition to classical contrabass. You can also start studying the contrabass in the rhythm music branch directly.
